Mount Aconcagua, at 6960 meters, is the highest peak in the Americas. It is also the highest peak outside of the Himalayas.
Bernie and I headed out with the goal of making it to the base camp, Plaza de los Mulas, but unfortutely the camp was closed for the winter. We could have risked the U$S200 fine and gone anyway, but with temperatures of -35C and high winds forecasted, we decided to just make it out ot Plaza Francia.
At 4200 meters, the top of the mountain pictured behind us here is a full two miles, 10,000ft above us. The normal route of ascension loops around the left side and approaches the mountain from the North. Here you are looking at the house face, which is nearly impossible to climb.
