Two more hours east of Montevideo lies Punta del Este, where probably more than half of the condos here are owned by portenos, who come here to shop, dine, lie on the beach and party late into the night.
The Point is a southward facing peninsula that has a calm, tranquil bay on the west and the Atlantic on the east, with a five minute walk to get from one side to the other.
About 15 minutes by bus northeast of the peninsula is La Barra, which shouldn’t be missed if you like the nightlife. This time of the year is it emptying out, and some of the bars have already closed down for the winter. Most were still open, though, and I found some live music that started at 1am.
At 6am I got back to the peninsula to take some photos of La Mano, and met a very nice family from Buenos Aires who hosts exchange students from the States. Of course, they had been out all night and were just heading home.
