Two and a half hours east of Colonia is the capital of Uruguay: Montevideo. Fine craftsman line the main tourist drag, selling leather goods, Mate cups, jewelry and art. The beaches northeast of the Old Town are very nice, and there is a good biking path up along the coast. Bike rentals are cheap too!
