What an anticlimactic experience. To hear others tell me about the charm and delight of this barrio gave me a mission not to miss this before I left. After 4 days of walking about 15 miles a day though, my feet needed a rest. I sprung for a cab and headed down there. After a nice chat with the cabbie in my broken Spanlish and 15 pesos later (he decided I'd prefer the "scenic" route), he dropped me off at La Boca. I walked up and turned the corner to witness the smallest tourist trap ever. La Boca proper is basically two streets of decorated buildings that host tacky souvenir shops or bad restaurants.
About 40 huge tourist buses parked nearby, and the corresponding 400 tourists crowded these two blocks taking photos and wondering where to eat and what to buy next. Luckily, the cabbie told me about the museum close by which had rooftop access for a nice aerial shot of the neighborhood.
