The Castle Village of Mesta on the Greek island of Xios was originally built as a medieval settlement to protect the local mastic farmers from pirates. Today it’s mainly an hour stop for the tour buses, but I managed to spend two nights inside in one of the old homes.

Next to the town square in the middle of the fortress, I found a souvenir saleslady who spoke English and asked if she knew where I could rent a room. “Of course!” After a couple of calls on her cell phone within a few minutes I met this old Greek lady who spoke no English but had a key to a room in exchange for some cash. No passport, no registration, no receipt. Decent place and it gave me some time to absorb the Mediterranean landscape and trails around the town.
